NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting an ongoing aerial baiting program from Monday 20th May 2024 to Friday 31st May 2024.

The operation will use 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes. The program will take place in Dharug National Park (NP), Koolewong Flora Reserve (FR), Manobalai Nature Reserve (NR), Parr State Conservation Area (SCA), Wollemi FR, Wollemi SCA, Yengo NP.

The program is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, especially threatened species, and to minimise the impact of wild dogs on neighbouring stock.

Signs will be placed at the entry to the baiting location. Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW National Parks managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Closed areas: Big Yango precinct closure

The Big Yango precinct in Yengo National Park including Mountain Arm campground, Blue Gums campground, the Yango Loop trail and Yango walking track are closed from Thursday 2 June 2022 to Saturday 18 May 2024 for repair and maintenance work.

Big Yango House and Haddens Hall are closed from Friday 3 May 2024 to Friday 10 May 2024 for repair and maintenance work.

Jacks Track in Yengo National Park is closed due to a dangerous landslip on private property. No access is permitted under any circumstances.

Walkers and mountain bike riders should use alternative trails.

Closed parks: Closed Park for aerial shooting pest control operation

The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be conducting aerial shooting for pest animal management purposes from Monday 3 June to Thursday 6 June 2024 in Werakata National Park (NP).

The purpose of the program is to primarily target deer as part of a state-wide conservation program and address our biosecurity obligations. It aims to reduce the significant impact deer have on threatened species and to reduce the economic impact of deer on neighbouring vineyards.

The shooting area will be closed to all visitors when aerial shooting is underway. Closure signs will be placed at all formal visitor access points to the shooting area.

Do not enter the shooting area. Penalties apply to unauthorised entry during closures.

Closed areas: Parts of Blue Mountains National Park closed

Many walking tracks, roads and fire trails within Blue Mountains National Park remain closed following sustained wet weather causing subsidence hazards, major landslides or infrastructure upgrades. 

The following areas are closed:

Katoomba and Leura

  • The following walking tracks are closed Monday 20 May for a helicopter operation: Prince Henry Cliff walk between Tallawalla lookout and Leura Cascades, Leura Cascades track, Leura Forest, Dardanelles Pass and Federal Pass between Leura Forest and below the Three Sisters.
  • Honeymoon Bridge is closed due to rockfall risk.
  • Leura Falls lookout is closed from Monday 20 May for upgrade works.
  • Glenraphael Drive (Narrowneck Plateau) will be closed south of the pumping station road (abseil site) on Tuesday 21 May for a helicoper operation. 
  • Fern Bower between Prince Henry Cliff walk (Grand Cliff Top walk) and Amphitheatre track is closed due to multiple landslides.
  • Federal pass between the Cooks Crossing (Kedumba River) and the Giant Staircase is closed due to a landslide.
  • Ruined Castle, Golden Stairs, Solitary Loop and Federal Pass west of Scenic World are closed due to multiple landslides.
  • Lone Lyrebird track is closed between Gordon Road and the War Memorial, due to subsidence. Detour is in place.
  • Sections of Prince Henry Cliff walk (part of Grand Cliff Top walk) and Round walk are closed between Prince Henry picnic area and Scenic World until 5pm Wednesday 15 May 2024 for track maintenance. Follow detour on Cliff Drive. Access to Furber Steps is from Prince Henry picnic area (Katoomba Falls Kiosk). Detours in place. The area will be open from early Thursday 16 to 5pm Sunday 19 May and will reclose, as above, to the end of June 2024.
  • Bridal Veil View lookout and track (Leura) are closed for maintenance.
  • Prince Henry Cliff walk (part of Grand Cliff Top walk) is closed between Gordon Falls picnic area and Elysian Rock lookout, due to a landslide. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • Prince Henry Cliff walk (part of Grand Cliff Top walk) is closed between Fern Bower track, Echo Tree and Flat Rock lookout, due to a landslide. Please use Cliff Drive as short detour. 
  • Part of Lindeman Pass is closed due to a major landslide below Gladstone lookout. Roberts Pass is closed due to rockfall and landslide hazards.   
  • Six-Foot track is affected by multiple road closures.

Wentworth Falls and Woodford   

  • Valley of Waters track is closed below Sylvia Falls. There is no access to Roberts Pass, Vera Falls, Hippocrene Falls or Wentworth Falls from Valley of the Waters.
  • Charles Darwin walk (part of the Grand Cliff Top walk) is closed between Fletcher Street and Weeping Rock. Detours are in place to provide directions to Wentworth Falls picnic area. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • Part of National Pass (west of Wentworth Falls middle crossing) is closed due to a major landslide and ongoing risks.
  • Wentworth Pass and Slack Stairs are closed due to multiple landslides.
  • Bedford Creek Trail will be closed Mon-Fri from 27 May to 5 July 2024 due to road repairs. There will be no access from Anderson Fire Trail or  Murphies Road to Ingar Camping Area. There will be also be no exit to Woodford from Andersons Fire Trail. Trials and Camping area will be open Sat & Sun. Ingar Camping Area open Sat night only.    

Blackheath, Mount Victoria and Bells Line of Road

  • Evans Lookout Road will be closed beyond Grand Canyon car park from 7:00am Monday 20th to 6:00pm Thursday 23rd May 2024 for road repairs. There will be no vehicle access to Evans lookout during this time. Pedestrians can use the walking track to the lookout which begins at the Grand Canyon car park toilets.
  • Perrys Lookdown Road (including Anvil Rock) will be closed to vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians from 7am-6pm Monday 20th  May for roadworks.
  • Williams track (Govetts descent) and Rodriguez Pass are closed due to rockfalls and landslides.
  • Pulpit Rock Reserve, lookouts and walking track are closed. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information. Pulpit Rock walking track from Popes Glen is open as far as the NPWS boundary (as shown on Google maps).

Adventure recreation, canyons, abseiling and rock climbing

NPWS will be implementing roadside vegetation management during May and June 2024 in the Gardens of Stone State Conservation Area and Wollemi National Park.

Roads affected are:

• Camp Road between Eastern Boundary Road and Forest Camp:
o Closed to the public for approximately 1 week.
o Access to Forest Camp via Eastern Boundary Road

• Glowworm Tunnel Road from Bungleboori Day Use Area to Galah Mountain Road:
o Traffic control will be in place for approximately 3 to 4 weeks. Sections of the road will be one-way traffic only. Expect short delays.

Closed areas: Glenbrook precinct closure

The Glenbrook precinct will be closed on weekdays for major roadworks, from Monday 29 April to Tuesday 15 October 2024.

Heavy machinery and vehicles will be in operation from Mondays to Fridays during this period. Access beyond the entry gate will be closed to all vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.

Heavy rainfall has caused a landslide to block a section of Federal Pass walking track.The following areas of the track are closed:

Safety alerts: Ultra trail running festival

Many walking tracks on the south side of Wentworth Falls to the Katoomba area will be busy from Thursday 16 to Sunday 19 May 2024 for the Ultra trail running festival. The affected trails include:

Minor roadworks along Glow Worm Tunnel Road will take place from Wednesday 10 January to Saturday 1 June 2024. This includes small sections of State Mine Gully Road and Old Bells Line of Road. The road won't be closed, however there will be traffic management in place to guide vehicles around roadworks.

The Glow Worm Tunnel visitor precinct and associated walking tracks are currently closed for upgrade works, and will re-open Saturday 1 June.

Newnes campground is available for walk-in access only. The campground is remote and can only be accessed by long walks via the Old Coach Road or the Pipeline Track.

Campers need to be fully self-sufficient and carry all supplies including drinking water. Campers are strongly advised to complete a trip intention form for their safety. Pack it in, pack it out – please take all rubbish with you when you leave.

 

There is no road access due to the Wolgan Road collapse and continuing land slip risk at Wolgan Gap. Wolgan Road is managed by Lithgow Council.

Safety alerts: Remote walking track conditions

Remote routes within the Kanangra Wilderness Area including Kanangra to Katoomba (K2K) trail have been impacted by heavy fire regrowth and flood damage.

In some places, tracks are no longer visible and are not easy to navigate, taking longer to traverse than expected. Limited to zero water sources are currently available along routes.

If you plan to walk in the area, please ensure you have an appropriate level of experience, navigation skills and equipment including Personal Locator Beacon (PLB). 

Mobile reception is limited so alternative communication methods are strongly recommended.

Safety alerts: Major Roadworks in Jilliby State Conservation Area - Commencing 27 December 2023

Major roadworks are scheduled to commence from Wednesday 27th December 2023 in Jilliby State Conservation Area (Southern Precinct) and part of Ourimbah State Forest.

Partial and intermittent road closures should be expected. The roads that will be affected are:

  • Red Hill Road
  • Prestons Ridge Road
  • Bradleys Point Road
  • Campbells Point Road and 
  • Tooheys Road.

 

Visitors are asked to avoid the area (if possible). Otherwise, please be aware of trucks and machinery using and working on the above roads and to drive to the conditions. Warning signs and traffic control will be in place. Work is expected to be completed by June 2024. The work is funded as part of the Fire Access and Fire Trail (FAFT) program aimed at providing safe and strategic fire trails for fire response and access.

The Climbers Walking Track between Gap Creek Camping Area and Bangalow Camping Area is closed due to the recent wildfire. Timber steps and walking track edges have been lost and the track surface is now unstable. It will take some time to repair and make safe. Visitors are asked not to use the track for their own safety. The nearby Gap Creek Waterfall track is open and available to visitors. Safety alerts: Watagan Road/Heaton Road closed due to landslips

Watagan Road (also known as Heaton Road) is closed until further notice due to a major landslip on the Cessnock City Council section.

There is no access from the cattle grid at the southern end of Heaton Road, Quorrobolong south, uphill to the Georges Road intersection in the Watagans NP.

This access road to Olney, Heaton State Forests and Watagans National Park is closed.

Work is currently underway way but will be complex, involve geotechnical planning, major earthworks and road realignment.

Closed areas: Six Foot track - Bowtells Bridge closure

Bowtells swing bridge on Six Foot track is closed to protect public safety. An upgrade is being planned and the bridge is expected to reopen in May 2024. Signs and barriers are in place to prevent access onto the bridge.

Crown Lands, which manages the bridge, is advising track users not to attempt to cross Coxs River. Any attempts to cross the river are at your own risk and are discouraged due to the potential for slips or falls, rainfall and risk of flash flooding.
